About the Area
Hartwick, NY
The Town of Hartwick, NY lies 10 miles west of Cooperstown, and 16 miles north of Oneonta, NY along the cross routes of NY 11 and State Route 205. The town’s founders were German Lutherans, with the name coming from minister John Christopher Hartwick (1714 – 1796). Significant architectural treasures line the main street, most built from the 1820s to the early 1900s when the Southern New York Railroad opened, passing just east of the main street. Churches, storefronts, private homes and farms all shared in the energy of the area. Many of these treasures still grace the wide main thoroughfare along Route 11, including several revitalized stores and bed and breakfasts.
With roughly 2000 residents calling the town home, Hartwick is a quiet, pleasant village that is only a few minutes’ drive to the summer festivities of Cooperstown and Oneonta. Baseball takes over these communities from June to September, but Hartwick withstands the crowds, and offers residents and guests peace and quiet even on the busiest of days.
